Solitamente un minareto di una moschea termina con un alem, l’ornamento metallico a forma di mezzaluna. Il minareto della moschea Defterdar adEyüp possiede invece non una ma sei mezzelune concentriche, con sopra un calamaio ed una penna.
La piccola moschea venne realizzata dal famoso architetto Sinannel 1540 su commissione di Mahmut Çelebi detto “Nazlı” (il capriccioso), Ministro delle Finanze (defterdar in turco, da qui il nome della moschea) del sultano Solimano il Magnifico.
Fu Mahmut Çelebi a volere sul minareto della sua moschea il calamaio e la penna per ricordare che egli fu un famoso calligrafo della sua epoca. Infatti il ministro era stato un allievo dello sceicco Hamdullah, il fondatore della scuola calligrafica ottomana, e nel tempo libero continuava a coltivare la sua grande passione nell’epoca di massimo splendore dell’impero ottomano.
Il soprannome “Nazlı” si dice derivasse dall’avarizia con cui esercitava le sue funzioni di ministro.
